Chocolate Mug Cake
A rich, single-serving chocolate cake made in the microwave in under five minutes. Dessert for one with nothing to clean up.
A mug cake is the answer to a sudden chocolate craving. Everything mixes right in the mug, cooks in the microwave in about a minute, and leaves you with a single dish to rinse.
The one thing to watch is timing. Pull it the moment the top sets, while the inside is still soft and fudgy, and it will be far better than any overcooked version.
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp flour
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp milk
- 2 tbsp neutral oil
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp chocolate chips, optional
Instructions
- In a large microwave-safe mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the milk, oil, and vanilla and stir until the batter is smooth with no dry pockets.
- Scatter the chocolate chips on top if using.
- Microwave on high for 70 to 90 seconds, until the top looks set but still slightly moist.
- Let it cool for a minute before eating straight from the mug.
Equipment
- Large microwave-safe mug
Tips
- Use a roomy mug; the cake rises a lot as it cooks.
- Stop as soon as the top sets; an extra 20 seconds turns it rubbery.
- Microwaves vary, so start at 70 seconds and add time in short bursts.
