Tuna Melt
Creamy tuna salad piled on bread with melted cheese, griddled until golden. A diner classic you can make in 15 minutes.
A tuna melt is the upgrade your tuna sandwich has been waiting for: the same creamy, briny filling, but griddled with melty cheese until the bread turns crisp and golden. It hits the exact comfort-food spot between a grilled cheese and a tuna sandwich.
Everything comes from the pantry and fridge, and it’s on the plate in about fifteen minutes. Serve it with chips, a pickle, or a bowl of tomato soup for dunking.
Ingredients
- 2 cans tuna, drained
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 stalk celery, finely diced
- 2 tbsp red onion, finely diced
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
Instructions
- In a bowl, flake the drained tuna with a fork, then stir in the mayonnaise, celery, red onion, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place two slices butter-side down, top each with a slice of cheese, half the tuna salad, another slice of cheese, and a second slice of bread butter-side up.
- Heat a skillet over medium-low and add the sandwiches.
- Cook 3 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
- Slice in half and serve hot.
Equipment
- Skillet
- Mixing bowl
- Spatula
Tips
- Cook over medium-low, not high. You want the cheese fully melted by the time the bread is browned.
- Cheese on both sides of the tuna glues the sandwich together and keeps the filling from sliding out.
- Drain the tuna well so the salad isn't watery and the bread stays crisp.
